Boston Pops, Dropkick Murphys, I'm Shipping Out To Boston, lyrics, name, Red Sox Album, Rizzoli and Isles, Theme Songs, title, video
Update: Thanks to readers Jon Van Horne and Red Sox Fan in the comments section for providing us more feedback on the theme song for Rizzoli and Isles: Boston Pops’ Instrumental Version to “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” from the “Red Sox Album”.
The Rizzoli and Isles theme song is jam packed full of energy that reflects the solid thrilling pace of the show. I would prefer the instrumental version although I don’t mind the Linkin Park-like voice blaring lyrics if I were on a pirate ship buckled down with scallywags. This song makes me want to watch Boondock Saints all over again.
“I’m Shipping Up To Boston” – Dropkick Murphys
Lyrics:
I’m a sailor peg
And I lost my leg
Climbing up the top sails
I lost my leg!
I’m shipping up to Boston … wayy-yooo!
I’m shipping up to Boston … wayyyyyy-yo!
I’m shipping up to Boston … wayy-yooo!
I’m shipping off … to find my wooden leg!

Dude… no… this is definetly not shipping up to boston dropkick murphys didnt use a flute they used a banjo not the same song or even the same chord progression.
Dude thanks for pointing it out E! I remember the trailer on TV sounded more like this song (tried searching for that but couldn’t find a vid) and the actual theme song during the episode sounding different.
I’ll definitely keep searching for it and correct the post once it’s all figured out.
its not Shipping up to Boston!
I think it might be the Boston Pops instrumental version of I’m Shipping Up To Boston. Homogenized for the TV audience. Not nearly as gritty as the Dropkick Murphys version.
Yes it is the Boston Pops version from “The Red Sox Album.”
Thanks for clearing that all up Jon van Horne and Red Sox Fan!!
It is 100% NOT any rendition of anything from DKM.
It kinda sounds like “He’s a Pirate”…..
I’ve been listening more and I am thinking the TV version is also different from the Boston Pops version. The Pops seems to use strings where the TV version uses flutes or some similar instrument. Makes sense that the TV show would record their own version. Definitely the same song however.
Hi jvanhorne!
Maybe I’ll send an email to the show and ask them about it. Thanks for your input! I really like the instrumental of the Rizzoli & Isles rendition a lot better.
these tv shows are good gena
Thr Rizolli & Isles theme music sounds a lot like Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)
I totally agree with you! It’s exactly what I have been thinking!
Well the R&I theme does use a flute or penny whistle or some such. But I can’t find that Ian Anderson has ever done a version of Shipping up to Boston. I did find an instrumental version. http://youtu.be/TogAoO_ToxU I think it’s a cut and past from the DKM version. Also learned that the DKM version was used in the soundtrack of the Departed. Also the lyrics are from Arlo Guthrie. There’s also a drunken acoustic version on Youtube: http://youtu.be/Yzz9uWDMmJI
I have the feeling that the reason we can’t find a download of the R&I theme is that only about 30 seconds of it exist (probably courtesy of Trailerhead).
Hi John! Thanks so much for the info! They really should just get the info out for us avid fans!
According to IMDB, and confirmed by author Tess Gerritsen, the opening theme was written for the show by film and television composer James S. Levine. The theme is composed as a jig, while The Dropkick Murphys’ “Shipping Up to Boston” was written as a reel… an explanation of the difference is here: http://www.irishtune.info/rhythm
What no one can seem to clarify, confirm or deny is whether Levine composed this as an interpretation/cover of “Shipping Up to Boston”, which would account for similarities. Good luck with that one!
I would like to get this as a ringtone. Anyone know how to do that?
@Rich Goodwin
Just go to Youtube and use one of the original themes there in order to convert it to MP3. I used that one:
